About Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui

Winner of two Olivier Awards, a Fred & Adele Astaire Award, the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award, and nominated for a Tony Award, choreographer and director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has produced work that spans contemporary dance, ballet, opera, theater, circus, musical, cinema, and fashion. After seven seasons as ballet director at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Cherkaoui now helms the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève and his own Antwerp-based contemporary dance company, Eastman.

As guest choreographer, he has worked for dance companies (Paris Opera Ballet, Pilobolus, Martha Graham Dance Company, Acosta Danza), opera houses (La Monnaie, Bayerische Staatsoper, Dutch National Opera), theater companies (American Repertory Theater, Bunkamura, Young Vic), musical artists (Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Sigur Rós, Woodkid), in feature films (Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina and Cyrano, Lukas Dhont’s Girl, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s Rebel), and in circus (Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios and Michael Jackson ONE). Cherkaoui is known as the choreographer and movement director of the award-winning Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill, to Alanis Morissette’s music directed by Diana Paulus, and Starmania, by Michel Berger and Luc Plamondon, directed by Thomas Jolly.

His thirst to join hands with his counterparts has been a constant in his artistic journey. Some well-known examples include Sutra (with sculptor Antony Gormley and the monks of the Shaolin temple, 2008), Dunas (with Maria Pagès, 2009), zero degrees (with Akram Khan, 2005), and since the foundation of Eastman, Play (with Shantala Shivalingappa, 2010), and an Accident / a Life (with Marc Brew, 2023).

In November 2024, the King of Belgium officially bestowed upon Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui the title of Baron.
