Volcano is a Toronto-based performance company that is active around the world, creating work adventurously and collaboratively with a focus on transcending borders of all kinds — international, artistic, and cultural.
Founded by theater director Ross Manson, Volcano has been at the forefront of independent theater in Canada for three decades, active on five continents and short-listed for or winning more than 70 awards worldwide. Recent projects include Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, which had its world premiere in Toronto in 2023 and was named as one of The New York Times’ top classical music performances of the year; The Book of Life (a Canada/Rwanda collaboration), performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2022, the SpoletoUSA Festival in 2023, and the Ubumuntu International Festival in 2023 in addition to a six-city U.S. tour; and Century Song, led by Neema Bickersteth and performed in 12 international cities. Upcoming projects include I Have a Drum with the Women Drummers of Rwanda; The Agreements, a video game/classical song cycle about finding your way through the forest; and Waiting for Godot - Inuktitut, a collaboration with the Iqaluit-based collective 662 OVA.
